The Guardians of Purpose

Marketing is uniquely positioned as the bridge between internal and external stakeholders, responsible for telling the company’s story to customers, partners and employees.

And that story is most impactful when it's rooted in purpose.

To identify the most meaningful ESG initiatives and create campaigns that truly resonate, you first need to ensure that your company’s purpose is clear, authentic, and effectively communicated.

To unlock the full power of purpose, it needs to appeal to the heart as well as the mind — something marketing teams excel at, thanks to their ability to connect with people on an emotional level.

So, where do you start?

(Re)Defining Purpose

Purpose can be found at the intersection of two key areas:

Commercial Strengths: what are we the best in the world at doing?

Societal Impact: how are we making the world a better place?

In other words, purpose is the reason your company exists, its "why" - a reason that goes much deeper than just making sales and profits.

It should still be related to how you add value to your customers in a way no-one else can, whilst also incorporating a positive impact on people or planet.

For more insights into defining purpose, refer back to edition #4, where we explored the differences between Purpose, Vision, and Mission and how they best fit together.

Purpose as a Compass for ESG Strategy

Once your purpose is clearly defined, it should become the foundation for your company’s ESG strategy.

Many companies see ESG as a reporting exercise or compliance requirement.  It is often treated as a cost, but it should be viewed as a driver of long-term value.

The key is to use your company’s purpose as the guiding factor for selecting impact initiatives, ensuring they are authentic and relevant to your key stakeholders.

It's also the best way to drive internal engagement.  We're all busy, and another compliance task is likely to remain at the bottom of an overflowing to-do list.

When ESG strategy is infused with a clear sense of purpose, these initiatives suddenly carry meaning; people care about them and are motivated to do them well.

Of course, some ESG initiatives will be driven by regulatory or stakeholder pressures rather than purpose.

It's important to address these to mitigate risk. But ensure that resources remain focussed on the initiatives that have strong alignment with purpose and high external urgency.

Simple tools like the Eisenhower ESG Matrix (see edition #12) can help with decision-making and prioritisation.

Create Compelling, Purpose-Driven Content

This is where marketing’s true power comes into play.

Once your purpose has been sharpened and your selected impact initiatives are underway, it’s time to tell the story.

Purpose-led content goes beyond traditional marketing—it connects with people on a deeper, emotional level.

Let’s say your tech company launched a pro-bono project with a local charity.  Your team used their skills to create digital solutions that transformed the effectiveness or efficiency of the charity, ultimately helping it achieve much greater impact.

Through the lens of purpose and positive impact, you are able to showcase the commercial strengths of your company, whilst also showing that you care.

This kind of content is highly effective at conveying your technical abilities, but more importantly: building trust.

A quirk of marketing is that non-'salesy' content often performs really well and ends up generating a lot of sales.

But this only works if the impact initiative and the resulting content are authentic.

That's why it's so important to invest the time into redefining your purpose as the first step.

Measure What Matters

The final step is often the most challenging: measuring the performance of your purpose-led initiatives.

Marketing teams can play an important role in linking impact initiatives to measurable business outcomes.

Continuing the example from above, when launching a campaign using content from the pro-bono project, did it generate high engagement? Did it attract high-value customers?

Consider the following metrics to track the success of your purpose-driven campaigns:

Click-through rates and conversions: Did the campaign resonate with your audience and lead to higher engagement?

Customer value: Were you able to attract your ideal customer profile?  Do these customers spend more and are they more loyal?

Lifetime value: Track how the lifetime value of customers acquired through these campaigns compare to other cohorts or an overall average.

By tracking and analysing these metrics, marketing teams can demonstrate the financial ROI of purpose-driven initiatives.

But things do not end there.

It's important to continue refining the process:

  • Track performance vs plan,

  • Implement improvements,

  • Continually optimise.
